Gambale s.r.l. was founded in 1969 in Ferrara, Italy. Mr. Vittorio Gamble began this family owned business by producing coloured cement roofing tiles with only six workers and a semi-automatic plant that could produce 1000 tiles an hour.
The tiles were popular and in 1974, a new plant was installed which allowed for complete automatic manufacturing, which increased tile production to 2,300 tiles an hour. Shortly after, Gambale created its most popular tile design: the striking Coppo Portoghese. This unique tile held a distinctive tri-dimensional profile that was patented due to its popularity with the Italian public. A special and unique production system was required for the complex Coppo Portoghese tile in order to give the tile its shape and quality. This production system included the manufacturing of a comprehensive set of accessories and colours, especially designed by Gambale to make the Coppo Portoghese tile the most attractive and complete roofing system on the market. Over the years, there were many requests for Gambale’s products in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and many other Asian countries. As a result, Gambale delivered a number of roofs to overseas customers.
However shipping costs from Italy prevented Gambale to offer their tiles to these customers at a competitive price. Then in 2000, Gambale made the decision to invest in a brand new state-of-the-art production line in Qingdao, China. This new factory addressed customers’ needs in China in particular and in Asia in general. This factory started production in 2002 with the same strict quality standards as the operations in Italy and can produce the exact same Coppo Portoghese tiles as those made in Ferrara. But production costs in China are much lower than Italy.
The Qingdao production line finally enabled Gambale to competitively offer the Coppo Portoghese tile to the Australian market. To do this efficiently, Gambale Roof Titles, Pty. Ltd. was established in 2007.
Gambale has grown rapidly over the years, but it remains a family-run business that holds on to the strong traditions and the original principles Gambale was founded on, namely: quality, design, innovations for better roofing systems and a focus on the environment.
